The regional Mexican restaurant and taqueria Corrochio’s is to quadruple in size, adding an extra 120-cover space on the ground floor above its Dalston site.

The new restaurant and bar, which takes over what was formerly a Turkish supermarket, will open in time for Cinco de Mayo (May 5), while the original basement will transform into a small drinking den call Cinco, full of music, small plates and boozy cocktails.

An announcement said the move will allow co-founders Daniel Corrochio, from Guadalajara, and front of house guru Amy McQuarrie to offer a “day-to-night” destination with regional Mexican food, an extensive list of native spirits, and DJ nights at weekends.

New menus will include speciality dishes from across Mexico, including bar food and brunches. On the way are enchiladas from Puebla, huaraches from Mexico City, and tostadas, which originated in Oaxaca. Bar snacks will range from tacos to fries to “torta”, a Mexican sandwich made with soft bread, this one made from a traditional Mexican bakery called Sweet Nibble in South London.

As for cocktails, these will use mezcals and tequilas, as well as lesser-known Mexican spirits including sotol, raicilla, and bacanora. Margaritas are to be the flagship.

Both Corrochio and McQuarrie said: “Our goal has always been to provide an honest and authentic home-away-from-home for those who appreciate and respect Mexican culture and cuisine.

“For the food to make you feel like you are in your favourite taqueria in Mexico City, for the drinks to take you back to those long nights sat at the bar drinking tequila and beer, and the service to be as warm as a hug from your mum.

“The expansion is a dream come true for us, and gives us the opportunity to widen our offering and to experiment more. But at the most basic, and perhaps most important level, it simply allows us the space to provide all of the above to even more people.”
