No matter how old we get, the prospect of brushing our teeth always feels like a chore.

With the help of electric toothbrushes, a lot of the hard work is taken out of the daily clean. However, prices of electric toothbrushes can range from anywhere between £10 and £800 if you’re in the market for an AI-powered device like the iO10 from Oral B.

We spoke to Dr Deepa Vakil, Lead Dentist and Clinical Director of Yor Dental for some insight into just what makes a toothbrush effective, and whether cheaper models could do the trick just as well.

Does the price of a toothbrush correlate to its effectiveness?

“The price of a toothbrush doesn't necessarily correlate directly with its effectiveness. While some pricier toothbrushes may come with additional features or technologies, a basic, well-designed toothbrush can still effectively remove plaque and debris when used correctly.”

Are electric toothbrushes better than manual ones?

“When it comes to electric versus manual toothbrushes, both can be effective at cleaning teeth, but electric toothbrushes may offer some advantages, such as built-in timers and oscillating brush heads that can provide a more thorough clean for some individuals, particularly those with dexterity issues or braces.”

What value-for-money electric toothbrush would you recommend?

“In terms of value-for-money toothbrushes, I often recommend mid-range options that strike a balance between affordability and quality. Look for toothbrushes with soft bristles and ergonomic handles that make brushing comfortable and effective.”

Are toothbrushes made from softer, sustainable materials good for your teeth?

“Toothbrushes made from softer, sustainable materials can be good for your teeth, especially if they are designed to effectively remove plaque and debris without causing damage to the gums or enamel. Additionally, opting for sustainable materials can reduce environmental impact, which is a positive aspect of these toothbrushes.”

Do activated charcoal toothbrushes work?

“Activated charcoal toothbrushes have gained popularity due to claims that they can whiten teeth and remove stains. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support these claims. While activated charcoal may have some abrasive properties that can help remove surface stains, it's essential to use caution, as excessive or harsh brushing with these brushes could potentially damage enamel or irritate gums. As with any toothbrush, it's crucial to prioritise gentle yet thorough cleaning techniques for optimal oral health.”

You heard it here first, folks. It’s not the instrument alone which helps to keep those pearly whites fresher than ever, it’s how you use it. Keep scrolling for a selection of value-for-money electric toothbrushes that you can put to work.
