As much as they have been a necessity over the decades, coin purses and bulky wallets are not the chicest when it comes to day-to-day accessories.

In 1958 the first modern credit card was launched by the Bank of America in Fresno, California. The BankAmericard was set to revolutionise the way we keep and exchange money, and revolutionise it did. Come 2023, cash is pretty much obsolete.

‘Cash-only’ restaurants and coffee-shops have exchanged their archaic rule for a far more modern one. Rather than only accepting a physical form monetary recompense, they have turned the opposite way, refusing cash as though it were an offensive exchange.

Street-buskers and Big Issue-sellers are equipped with those handy contactless payment terminals, making even the smaller payments easier than ever. No more counting out 20p coins at your local corner shop for that can of Diet Coke you’ve been craving all day.

Though Apple Pay is yet another revolutionary means of payment, many of us still have a range of cards on file - and where better to keep them safe than a chic, sleek and subtle card-holder? After all, cash may no longer be king – but you still need your ID, work pass and discount cards on file.

Keep scrolling for a round-up of the best cardholders on the market, from the fashionable to the utilitarian.
